The activity of humans leads to the formation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. As a result, the temperature rises. Climate change, ozone layer depletion, global warming, the greenhouse effect, and carbon footprint are common terms we use nowadays when referring to the environment.
The Cause and Effect
Greenhouse
gases like Methane, Oxides of sulfur and nitrogen, especially carbon dioxide in
excess, cause environmental problems. The calculated amount of the gases
produced due to your actions is called a carbon footprint. The United States
has one of the highest carbon footprints per person in the world. It's causing
an issue in today's world, and remedies are necessary before it is too late.
The lifestyle that you lead determines the carbon dioxide that you add to the
atmosphere. This problem has started affecting others in the last few decades
with the discovery of fossil fuels. Deforestation is also one of the causes of
the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Data shows the average footprint
of a person to be 4 tonnes a year.
Shift to Renewable Resources
Developed
countries contribute more to the footprint as they burn a lot of fossil fuel to
generate electricity, run cars, airplanes, industries, etc. They have to
enforce methods for carbon footprint reduction. The value for America based on the carbon footprint is
20, Europe 10, and India 1. When a country shifts to other methods like wind,
hydroelectric, or nuclear power to produce energy, the country's footprint
decreases. Avoiding or reducing the use of fossil fuels is the only way.
Consuming more vegetables and reducing meat intake can decrease your footprint
as 14% of the greenhouse gases form from meat processing. Cutting down on that
can reduce the amount of Methane and other gases released into the atmosphere.
These events' negative side includes a change in weather patterns, melting of
glaciers, loss of habitat, etc.
