Marimo- Moss or Algae

Many people are aware of the word-Algae. Algae are photosynthetic organisms found on the base of the freshwater. Algae are of 7-major type, one of them being green algae. Marimo moss is a type of green algae that looks like moss but is not really a moss. It is named as moss due to all the algal strings around it gives a velvet touch like that of a moss.

Marimo moss is a green algae found in lakes on the northern hemisphere. The marimo moss is very smooth in complexion, and round with varying sizes. The round appearance is because the marimo moss is found on the depths, and because of the nature of tide and for photosynthesis to occur from all sides.

The marimo moss is also known as ‘seaweed ball’. It is simply a ball of solid algae that rolls around. It is very famous due to many reasons, along with the legend attached to it.

The marimo moss is very famous in Japan, because it was found in Lake Akan. Legend has it, the daughter of the chief from a tribe nearby fell in love with a commoner. The tribe were against it, thus the two lovers ran away. It is said they fall in Lake Akan, and drowns. It is said that they turned into a ball of moss.
