Benefits of Disinfecting with Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (having the chemical formula H2O2 which is one extra molecule as compared to regular water) is a common name inside the households throughout the world. It is a very unique smell associated with it and usually is available in a specific brown coloured bottled to keep light away from it. This is because light breaks down the molecules of this chemical, rendering it useless for its basic purposes. Disinfecting with hydrogen peroxide is the most commonly served purpose of this chemical. Different concentrations of this chemical can be found easily in medical and grocery stores. Using a 3% concertation of hydrogen peroxide is the most recommended quantity at domestic level. Higher concentrations pose more danger than benefits.

Hydrogen peroxide can fight with different types of bacteria as well as viruses commonly found inside homes. There are many places in a house where such bacteria or virus can stay and grow such as sinks, floors, dustbins, windows, knobs of the doors, toilets, tops of the counters, showers, walls and many other places. A hydrogen peroxide disinfectant can be used on all these surfaces and places. On almost every surface, a little time is needed by this chemical to start working. Therefore, it should be left for some time on the desired surface otherwise its main purpose will not be fulfilled at all i.e., the bacteria or virus will not be destroyed completely.

While using this chemical on different household surfaces, one thing must be kept in mind i.e., it can affect the finishing or looks of certain types of surfaces. For instance, marble, granite, wood and coloured surfaces must always be checked prior to cleaning them with a hydrogen peroxide disinfectant cleaner. A small area of such surfaces should be used as a testing sample and if no damage is observed then the rest of the surface should be cleaned accordingly. In addition to cleaning the above-mentioned surfaces, hydrogen peroxide can also be used for disinfecting and cleaning many other household items.
