The famous Medigap plans are-
·
Medigap
Plan F – Covers 100% of the gap but is very expensive. It had a higher rate of
interest and is now eliminated. The plan includes a premium
for Medicare Part A, i.e., hospitalization, deductible, and first 60 days of
medical expenses at the hospital. The average premium of this plan is $169.14.
·
Medigap Plan G – In this plan, you have to pay the
Part B deductible after then 100% coverage is provided to you. The cost in 2020
is $198. It has a lower premium than Plan F and is the most popular plan.
·
Medigap
Plan N – It contains 100% of Medicare plan B as in Plan G but has lower
premiums. A possible copay for a doctor's visit is $20. It could be less than
this but never more. In this plan, you don't have to pay Part B excess charges.
How to be eligible for
Medigap?
To be able to get benefits from
the AARP Medicare Supplement plans, you must be associated with
Medicare. It's available to US citizens of age 65 and above.
Medigap Vs. Medicare
Advantage plan
Medicare Advantage plans have
a lower premium than AARP Medicare Supplement plans or Medigap. Medigap
expenses do increase with the age of the patient. But it covers fewer expenses
than that of Medigap. There is more out-of-pocket expenditure hence may lead to
greater expenses overall. Before choosing one between these two, one must keep
one's lifestyle and health condition in perspective. One can only switch from Medicare
Supplement plans to Medicare advantage plan and not vice
versa.
